EFC 50 Results: du Plessis Chokes van Staden, Captures Title

On Friday, June 17, EFC Worldwide held its 50th event from Sun City in North West, South Africa.

In the night’s main event, the promotion’s vacant welterweight title was up for grabs between Driscus du Plessis and Martin van Staden.

The 21-year-old du Plessis had sought EFC gold before, coming up short against current UFC middleweight Garreth McLellan at EFC 33. Since then, he finished three straight fights to earn a crack at the vacant welterweight strap.

Van Staden, meanwhile, held a significant experience advantage over his younger foe. With more than 30 professional fights, van Staden had a knack for finishes. Twenty of his 22 career victories had come before the final bell, including 16 by way of knockout.

EFC 50 kicked off Friday with the preliminary card at 16:45 CAT. The main card followed at 20:00 CAT.
