On Saturday, Oct. 4, the UFC hosted UFC Fight Night 54: MacDonald vs. Saffiedine from the Halifax Metro Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
In the night’s main event, Canadian welterweight Rory MacDonald squared off with former Strikeforce title holder Tarec Saffiedine. Both fighters looked to move one step closer to a 170-pound title shot. The 25-year-old MacDonald had won eight of his 10 UFC outings, with his only losses coming to former interim champion Carlos Condit and current No. 1 contender Robbie Lawler. MacDonald most recently defeated Tyron Woodley at UFC 174 in June. Saffiedine had battled injuries since capturing Strikeforce gold. He bested Hyun Gyu Lim in January in his lone Octagon appearance.
The co-main event featured a bantamweight clash between Brazilian Raphael Assuncao and TUF alum Bryan Caraway. Assuncao had won six straight, including a hard-fought decision win over current champion T.J. Dillashaw. Caraway, meanwhile, had earned submission victories in four of his five UFC bouts. He most recently stopped Erik Perez in June.
The 12-fight event kicked off Saturday with two preliminary card fights streaming live on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET. Four additional preliminary card bouts followed at 8 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 2, with the six-fight main card airing live on FX at 10 p.m. ET.
