On Saturday, Sept. 27, the UFC hosted UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
In the main event of the evening, flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defended his 125-pound title against challenger Chris Cariaso. Johnson entered the contest riding a six-fight winning streak, including four straight title defenses. The 28-year-old was last in action at UFC 174 in June, topping Ali Bagautinov by decision. Cariaso, meanwhile, carried a three-fight streak of his own. The 33-year-old striking stalwart had gone 7-3 inside the Octagon leading up to the title affair.
The co-main event featured the long-awaited UFC debut of former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, who took on the red-hot Donald Cerrone. Alvarez recently gained his release from Bellator MMA after reclaiming the promotion’s 155-pound title last fall. Cerrone had scored four straight finishes leading into the bout.
Also on the main card, Irish featherweight sensation Conor McGregor faced the toughest test of his career as he took on veteran Dustin Poirier.
The 11-fight event kicked off Saturday with two fights streaming live on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m. ET. Four additional preliminary card bouts followed on Fox Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET, with the five-fight main card airing live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.
