The UFC returns to Edmonton, Alberta, on Saturday, Oct. 17, with a pivotal welterweight clash between No. 10-ranked Joaquin Buckley and No. 13-ranked Canadian Mike Malott at Rogers Place.
Buckley (21-8) heads north looking to continue his climb toward the top five. The St. Louis native has established himself as one of the division’s most dangerous finishers, earning notable victories over Colby Covington, Stephen Thompson and Vicente Luque. A win in hostile territory would keep Buckley firmly in the crowded welterweight title picture.
Standing across from him will be Malott (14-2-1), who gets his second UFC main event and an opportunity to crack the welterweight top 10 on home soil. The Dana White’s Contender Series product has collected victories over Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland and Charles Radtke. A win over Buckley would represent another major step toward title contention for the Ontario native.
The card also features an important women’s flyweight showdown between No. 4-ranked Erin Blanchfield and No. 7-ranked Jasmine Jasudavicius.
Blanchfield (14-2) enters on a two-fight winning streak and has used her high-level grappling to remain among the division’s elite. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt owns submission victories over Tracy Cortez, Jessica Andrade and Molly McCann.
Jasudavicius (15-4) will look to capitalize on the home-country advantage after defeating Karine Silva in April. The Canadian has also scored finishes over Andrade, Ariane da Silva and Priscila Cachoeira. A victory over the fourth-ranked Blanchfield could propel Jasudavicius into the division’s top five.
Canadian talent is featured throughout the UFC Edmonton card. Montreal’s Mandel Nallo meets Nate Landwehr at lightweight, Marc-Andre Barriault faces Kyle Daukaus at middleweight and Edmonton heavyweight Tanner Boser battles Jhonata Diniz.
Jamey-Lyn Horth takes on former UFC flyweight title challenger Katlyn Cerminara, while No. 15-ranked bantamweight Melissa Croden meets Chelsea Chandler. Dana White’s Contender Series contract winner Louis Jourdain will make his UFC debut against Timmy Cuamba at bantamweight.
UFC Fight Night: Buckley vs. Malott takes place Saturday, Oct. 17, at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The early prelims stream on UFC Fight Pass at 5 p.m. ET, followed by the prelims at 6 p.m. ET and the main card at 8 p.m. ET on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.
