Is Eric Gomez’s Golden Boy Future Worth Watching?

Golden Boy Promotions has spent more than two decades as one of boxing’s most recognizable promotional companies. However, after years of high-profile fighter departures, contractual disputes and changes within the organization, the promotion appears to be approaching an important period in its history.

That naturally raises questions about the future of longtime Golden Boy President Eric Gomez.

There has been no announcement that Gomez is leaving Golden Boy, and there is no publicly established evidence that his position is in jeopardy. Any suggestion that a leadership change involving Gomez could occur is therefore speculation.

Still, Golden Boy’s recent history provides plenty to examine.

Golden Boy’s Fighter Problem

The biggest concern is the promotion’s track record with several of its most important fighters.

Canelo Alvarez separated from Golden Boy following litigation in 2020. Seniesa Estrada departed amid a contractual and financial dispute in 2022 before signing with Top Rank. Golden Boy sued Ryan Garcia in 2023 to enforce its promotional agreement, while Jaime Munguia left after his contract expired in 2024 and subsequently signed with Top Rank.

Then came Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Ortiz sued Golden Boy in Jan. 2026 seeking to terminate his promotional agreement following the collapse of a proposed fight with Jaron Ennis. Golden Boy and Ortiz eventually reached a confidential settlement in July and agreed to continue working together.

Fighters changing promoters and contractual disputes are nothing unusual in boxing. It would also be unfair to assign any failed relationship to Gomez or any single executive.

However, the cumulative effect is significant.

Canelo was Golden Boy’s biggest star. Garcia emerged as its biggest mainstream attraction after him. Munguia was an important Mexican draw. Estrada became an undisputed champion after leaving the promotion.

Golden Boy has continued producing major fights, but retaining elite talent has become a recurring storyline.

Ryan Garcia Could Be the Bigger Concern

Garcia’s relationship with Golden Boy may now be the most important situation facing the company.

Golden Boy sent a cease-and-desist letter in June after Garcia’s proposed fight with Conor Benn moved forward without the promotion’s approval or participation in the original negotiations, according to public records.

Golden Boy is now listed as a co-promoter of the event, after some promotional material only had Zuffa Boxing and Ring Magazine listed as promoters. On The Ariel Helwani Show in mid-July, Oscar De La Hoya confirmed that Golden Boy will be co-promoting the event.

Nevertheless, Golden Boy having to publicly defend its contractual rights concerning one of its biggest stars is another chapter in an increasingly familiar story.

Garcia has also publicly stated that he has one fight remaining on his Golden Boy deal following the Benn fight.

If Garcia eventually leaves, Golden Boy will again face the difficult task of developing its next crossover attraction.

Where Does That Leave Eric Gomez?

This is where the distinction between fact and speculation becomes particularly important.

Gomez remains Golden Boy’s president. There has been no announced departure, and the publicly documented developments do not establish that Golden Boy intends to remove him.

But Gomez has been one of the promotion’s most prominent executives throughout much of this period. That makes questions about the company’s direction – and the leadership responsible for determining it – reasonable as Golden Boy enters its next chapter.

The issue is bigger than one fighter leaving.

Golden Boy has experienced contractual battles involving some of the most important fighters on its roster. It has lost established stars to competing promoters and has repeatedly found itself navigating disputes over promotional agreements.

At some point, those results inevitably create questions about strategy.

That does not mean Gomez is going anywhere.

It means what happens next matters.

Golden Boy Is at a Crossroads

There are also reasons to reject any suggestion that Golden Boy is simply fading away.

The promotion renewed its multiyear relationship with DAZN in Mar. 2026, maintaining an important distribution platform. Golden Boy remains an established boxing brand with the ability to develop fighters and stage significant events.

The question is whether it can retain the stars it develops.

Garcia’s future could provide an important answer.

If Golden Boy retains Garcia beyond his current agreement, continues rebuilding its relationship with Ortiz and develops another generation of attractions, much of the current uncertainty could quickly fade.

If Garcia joins the list of major fighters who have moved on, however, scrutiny of Golden Boy’s direction will only increase.

And as president, Gomez will naturally be part of that conversation.

There is currently no public evidence that Eric Gomez is about to leave Golden Boy. Suggesting otherwise as fact would go beyond what the publicly documented record supports.

But after Canelo, Estrada, Munguia, the litigation involving Ortiz and the continuing contractual story surrounding Garcia, Golden Boy is entering an important period.

The question is not whether Gomez is next.

The more defensible question is whether Golden Boy’s next chapter will require a change in direction – and what role Gomez will have in shaping it.
